Ifex is primarily used to treat testicular cancer (especially when other treatments have not been effective), as well as certain soft tissue sarcomas, Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, and other solid tumors. It may be used alone or in combination with other chemotherapy agents.

Ifex is an alkylating agent that works by binding to DNA strands and causing cross-linking, which prevents cancer cells from dividing and replicating. This interference with DNA function leads to cancer cell death. The drug is metabolized in the liver to its active form.

Ifex can cause significant side effects including hemorrhagic cystitis (bladder inflammation with bleeding), which is why the protective agent mesna is often given alongside it. Other serious risks include neurotoxicity, bone marrow suppression, and kidney toxicity. Adequate hydration is essential during treatment. Regular blood tests and monitoring are required throughout therapy.
