Imlygic is indicated for the treatment of unresectable (cannot be surgically removed) recurrent melanoma in patients who have also received prior systemic therapy. It is injected directly into visible or palpable melanoma lesions in the skin or lymph nodes.

Imlygic is a genetically modified herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) that selectively replicates within tumors, causing tumor cell death. The virus also produces a protein (GM-CSF) that stimulates the patient's immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells, potentially affecting both treated and untreated lesions.

Imlygic is contraindicated in immunocompromised patients and pregnant women due to the risk of disseminated herpes infection. Common side effects include fatigue, chills, fever, nausea, and injection site reactions. Healthcare providers should use appropriate precautions when handling and administering this medication to avoid transmission to close contacts.
