Imodium is used to treat acute diarrhea (including traveler's diarrhea), reduce the frequency of bowel movements in individuals with ileostomies, and manage chronic diarrhea associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel conditions.

Imodium contains loperamide, an opioid receptor agonist that acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract. It slows intestinal motility by affecting the smooth muscle of the gut, allowing more time for water and electrolytes to be absorbed from stool, resulting in firmer, less frequent bowel movements.

Imodium should not be used if there is blood in the stool or if you have a fever, as this may indicate a bacterial infection that requires different treatment. It is not recommended for children under certain ages without medical supervision. Prolonged use should be avoided and medical advice sought if symptoms persist beyond 48 hours. Those with liver disease should consult a healthcare provider before use.
