Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for suspected or confirmed rabies exposure, including bites, scratches, or mucous membrane contact with saliva from animals suspected of carrying the rabies virus. Used when the patient has not previously received rabies vaccination.
Provides passive immunization by supplying ready-made anti-rabies antibodies that neutralize the rabies virus at the wound site. Works in conjunction with the rabies vaccine, which stimulates active immunity, providing immediate protection while the body develops its own immune response.
Administered once at the time of initial rabies vaccine dose; should be infiltrated around and into the wound site as thoroughly as possible; not given in the gluteal region; patients with bleeding disorders may require special consideration; should not be given after wound has healed or if patient has prior rabies vaccination history.
