Maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Not indicated for asthma or acute bronchospasm episodes.
As a long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA), indacaterol binds to beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, causing relaxation and bronchodilation that lasts approximately 24 hours.
Should not be used as rescue therapy for acute breathing problems. Associated with a risk of asthma-related death when used alone for asthma. Common side effects may include cough, headache, and nasopharyngitis. Patients should avoid exceeding the recommended dose.
