Prevention and treatment of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants, particularly those born before 32 weeks gestation who have insufficient natural lung surfactant production.
Infasurf contains calfactant, a natural surfactant that reduces surface tension in the alveoli of the lungs. This prevents the tiny air sacs from collapsing during exhalation, allowing for easier breathing and improved oxygen exchange.
Infasurf is only administered in acute hospital settings by trained healthcare professionals experienced in neonatal intensive care. Transient side effects may include slowed heart rate, decreased oxygen saturation, and reflux during administration. It is derived from bovine lung tissue and should be used with caution in patients with known sensitivities to animal-derived products.
