Treats hairy cell leukemia, malignant melanoma, follicular lymphoma, condyloma acuminata, AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma, and chronic hepatitis B and C infections. May also be used for other conditions as determined by a healthcare provider.
Binds to type I interferon receptors on cell surfaces, activating JAK-STAT signaling pathways. This induces the expression of hundreds of interferon-stimulated genes that produce proteins with antiviral, antiproliferative, and immune-modulating effects, ultimately inhibiting viral replication and tumor cell division.
Administered by injection (subcutaneous, intramuscular, or intralesional). Common side effects include flu-like symptoms, fatigue, and bone marrow suppression. Contraindicated in patients with severe heart disease, autoimmune disorders, or uncontrolled psychiatric conditions. Requires close monitoring of blood counts and liver function during treatment.
