Iodohippurate I123 Sodium
Iodohippurate I123 Sodium is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent used primarily for nuclear medicine imaging of kidney function. It contains iodine-123 bound to hippurate and is administered intravenously before renal scintigraphy to evaluate renal perfusion, tubular function, and urinary drainage. This agent is particularly valuable for assessing differential renal function, detecting obstructions, and evaluating kidney transplant viability.

Evaluation of renal function and perfusion, detection and localization of urinary tract obstructions, assessment of renal artery stenosis, differential renal function determination, evaluation of hydronephrosis, and monitoring of kidney transplant viability
After intravenous administration, Iodohippurate I123 Sodium is rapidly taken up by the kidneys through a combination of renal plasma flow and tubular extraction. The radioactive iodine-123 allows external detection by gamma camera, producing functional images that reveal renal perfusion, secretory function, and urinary drainage patterns
As a radioactive agent, appropriate radiation safety precautions must be followed. Adequate hydration before the study improves image quality and artifact clearance. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are contraindications or require careful consideration. Patients should void frequently after the procedure to minimize radiation exposure. Interaction with certain medications may affect results; disclose all current medications to the healthcare provider.
