Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Isopto Atropine is an ophthalmic anticholinergic medication used primarily to dilate the pupil and temporarily paralyze the focusing muscles of the eye. It is commonly prescribed for eye examinations, treatment of inflammatory conditions like uveitis, and as part of amblyopia therapy in children. The medication works by blocking muscarinic receptors in the eye's muscles, causing pupil dilation and cycloplegia.

Used for pupil dilation during eye examinations, treatment of anterior uveitis and iritis to prevent posterior synechiae, cycloplegic refraction, and as part of amblyopia (lazy eye) treatment in children. May also be used for certain inflammatory conditions of the eye.

Contains atropine sulfate, an anticholinergic agent that blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the smooth muscle of the iris and ciliary body. This causes relaxation of the sphincter pupillae muscle (leading to mydriasis/pupil dilation) and the ciliary muscle (leading to cycloplegia/temporary inability to focus for near vision).

May cause blurred vision, light sensitivity, and stinging upon application. Systemic absorption can lead to anticholinergic effects such as dry mouth, flushing, or tachycardia. Contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma. Use with caution in children and elderly patients. Regular monitoring of intraocular pressure may be required during treatment.
