Izervay is indicated for the treatment of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). GA is a progressive condition that leads to permanent vision loss by damaging the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision.
Izervay is a complement C5 inhibitor. It works by targeting and inhibiting the C5 protein, which is part of the complement system—an immune response pathway involved in the inflammatory processes that contribute to GA progression. By blocking this pathway, Izervay helps reduce the damage to retinal cells and may slow the progression of geographic atrophy.
Izervay is administered as an intravitreal injection (into the eye) by a qualified healthcare professional, typically every month. Common side effects may include eye discomfort, small particles in the field of vision (vitreous floaters), and increased intraocular pressure. Patients should be monitored for signs of infection or inflammation following injection. This medication is not indicated for patients with active eye infections. Patients should discuss their complete medical history with their doctor, including any current medications, to ensure Izervay is appropriate for them.
