Ketaset is used in veterinary medicine to induce general anesthesia and sedation for surgical procedures, diagnostic examinations, and minor medical interventions in various animal species. It may also be used for restraint purposes and as part of anesthetic protocols.

Ketaset works as a noncompetitive antagonist at NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) glutamate receptors, disrupting excitatory neurotransmission and producing dissociative anesthesia. This results in a trance-like state with profound analgesia, amnesia, and immobility while maintaining protective reflexes.

Ketaset should only be administered by veterinary professionals. It may cause salivation, muscle tremors, or vocalization during recovery. Contraindications include use in animals with seizures, hypertension, or heart conditions. Ketamine is a controlled substance with potential for abuse.
