Klonopin is FDA-approved for the treatment of seizure disorders (including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and akinetic seizures) and panic disorder. It may also be used off-label for anxiety, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, and as an adjunct treatment for bipolar disorder.

Klonopin works by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a natural chemical in the brain that promotes calmness and reduces neuronal excitability. This increases GABA's inhibitory effects, resulting in reduced anxiety, muscle relaxation, and anticonvulsant properties.

Klonopin is a Schedule IV controlled substance with a risk of dependence and addiction, especially with prolonged use. It should not be stopped abruptly, as withdrawal symptoms can occur. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and coordination problems. Alcohol and other CNS depressants should be avoided. Use during pregnancy is generally not recommended.
