Kyleena is indicated for prevention of pregnancy (contraception) in women who have not been pregnant. It is a long-acting, reversible form of birth control suitable for women who desire long-term contraception.

Kyleena releases the progestin levonorgestrel into the uterus. This thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the uterus, thins the uterine lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation, and may also suppress ovulation in some women.

Kyleena must be placed by a qualified healthcare provider. Common side effects may include irregular bleeding, headache, and ovarian cysts. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The device should be removed after 5 years if continued contraception is desired. Women with certain conditions (active liver disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, pelvic infection) should not use Kyleena.
