Lanadelumab

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Lanadelumab is a monoclonal antibody medication used for the preventive treatment of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in patients aged 12 years and older. It works by binding to and inhibiting plasma kallikrein, an enzyme responsible for producing bradykinin, thereby reducing the frequency and severity of HAE attacks.

Quick summary

Administration route information

Lanadelumab is indicated for the routine prevention of recurrent attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in patients 12 years of age and older. It is not used for acute attack treatment but rather as a long-term preventive therapy.

Lanadelumab is a fully human monoclonal antibody (IgG1/κ-light chain) that specifically binds to plasma kallikrein and inhibits its proteolytic activity. By blocking plasma kallikrein, it prevents the cleavage of high-molecular-weight kininogen (HMWK) into cleaved HMWK and bradykinin, reducing bradykinin-mediated swelling attacks.

Lanadelumab is administered as a subcutaneous injection. Common adverse reactions include injection site reactions, upper respiratory infections, and headache. Patients should be monitored for hypersensitivity reactions. It is intended for use under the guidance of a physician experienced in managing HAE.
