Lantus is indicated for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in adults and children aged 6 years and older with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who require long-acting insulin for glycemic control.

Lantus is a recombinant insulin analog that provides a slow, sustained release of insulin over 24 hours. It works by binding to insulin receptors on cells, promoting glucose uptake into cells and tissues while reducing glucose production in the liver, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.

Lantus is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis. It should be administered subcutaneously once daily at the same time each day. Patients should rotate injection sites and monitor blood glucose regularly. Never share insulin pens, and store unopened vials in the refrigerator. Hypoglycemia is the most common adverse effect.
