Lemtrada is FDA-approved for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including relapsing-remitting MS and active secondary progressive MS. It is typically prescribed for patients who have had an inadequate response to two or more other MS therapies.
Lemtrada is a monoclonal antibody that binds to CD52, a glycoprotein found abundantly on the surface of T cells and B cells. By targeting this protein, it causes the depletion of these lymphocytes, which are believed to play a role in the autoimmune attack on the central nervous system in MS. After depletion, the immune system gradually reconstitutes.
Lemtrada carries a boxed warning for serious autoimmune conditions, infusion reactions, and increased risk of malignancies. Patients require close monitoring before, during, and after treatment, including regular blood tests. Treatment consists of two courses: an initial course followed by a second course one year later. It is only available through a restricted distribution program due to its safety profile.
