Lifitegrast is indicated for the treatment of both signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). It helps reduce ocular surface inflammation in patients with inadequate tear production.
Lifitegrast is an integrin antagonist that binds to LFA-1 (lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1) on the surface of leukocytes. By blocking the interaction between LFA-1 and its ligand ICAM-1 (which is often overexpressed in dry eye disease), it prevents inflammatory cell adhesion and activation in corneal and conjunctival tissues, reducing inflammation.
Lifitegrast is for topical ophthalmic use only. Common side effects may include eye irritation, discomfort, blurred vision, and unusual taste sensation. Patients should remove contact lenses before administration and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting. Consult your healthcare provider if symptoms do not improve or worsen.
