Lindane is used to treat infestations with scabies mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) and body lice (Pediculus corporis). It is typically prescribed when patients cannot tolerate first-line treatments like permethrin or malathion, or when those treatments have failed.

Lindane is an organochlorine compound that acts as a neurotoxin to arthropods and parasites. It disrupts normal nerve function in parasites by interfering with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in their nervous systems, leading to paralysis and death of the parasites.

Due to neurotoxicity concerns, Lindane is restricted in many countries and available only through limited distribution programs in others. It should not be used in premature infants, young children, pregnant or nursing women, or patients with uncontrolled seizure disorders. Application must follow specific instructions to minimize systemic absorption and risk of adverse effects.
