Locoid is used to treat various inflammatory and pruritic (itchy) skin conditions including atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and allergic skin reactions. It may also be prescribed for conditions like lichen planus and discoid lupus erythematosus.
Locoid contains hydrocortisone butyrate, a synthetic corticosteroid that works by suppressing the body's immune response and reducing inflammation. It inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators, constricts blood vessels, and decreases the activity of inflammatory cells in the skin, thereby relieving redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort.
Locoid is for external use only and should not be applied to open wounds, infected skin, or the face unless specifically directed by a physician. Prolonged use on large areas may lead to skin thinning (atrophy), systemic absorption, or other corticosteroid-related side effects. It is generally not recommended for use in children, during pregnancy, or while breastfeeding without medical supervision. Patients should follow their healthcare provider's instructions regarding application frequency and duration.
