Used for short-term treatment of insomnia and sleep disorders, as well as for preoperative sedation to reduce anxiety before surgical procedures.
Lormetazepam binds to benzodiazepine receptors on the GABA-A receptor complex, enhancing the inhibitory effects of GABA neurotransmitter. This increases chloride ion influx into neurons, reducing neuronal excitability and producing sedative and hypnotic effects.
This medication is intended for short-term use only (typically 2-4 weeks) due to risk of dependence and tolerance. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. May cause next-day drowsiness and cognitive impairment. Alcohol and other CNS depressants should be avoided. Not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in patients with severe respiratory insufficiency. Use with caution in elderly patients.
