Lotilaner
Lotilaner is an ophthalmological medication used to treat conditions caused by parasitic mites, particularly Demodex mites affecting the eyelids. It works by inhibiting GABA-gated chloride channels in mites, leading to paralysis and death of the parasites. This medication is applied topically to the eye area and provides targeted anti-parasitic action against mite infestations.
Lotilaner is a topical eye medication that kills Demodex mites by inhibiting their nervous system, treating associated eyelid inflammation.

Lotilaner is indicated for the treatment of Demodex blepharitis, an inflammatory eyelid condition caused by infestations of Demodex mites (eyelash mites). These mites can cause eyelid redness, scaling, crusting, and discomfort.
Lotilaner selectively inhibits gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-gated chloride channels in mites. This disruption of nerve signaling causes paralysis and eventual death of the mites. Importantly, lotilaner specifically targets invertebrate (mite) GABA channels and does not inhibit mammalian GABA-mediated chloride channels, providing a safety margin for human use.
Lotilaner is for topical ophthalmic use only and should be applied as directed to the eyelids. It is specifically designed to be selective for mites and has a safety profile that spares mammalian nervous systems. Patients should follow their healthcare provider's instructions regarding application frequency and duration of treatment. As with any topical eye medication, avoid contamination of the applicator tip.
