Lutrate is indicated for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer, breast cancer, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids. It may also be used for central precocious puberty and anemia caused by uterine fibroids.

As a GnRH agonist, Lutrate initially stimulates the pituitary gland to increase hormone release, but with continued administration, it causes desensitization of the pituitary, leading to decreased production of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This results in reduced production of testosterone and estrogen, depriving hormone-sensitive tissues and tumors of their growth stimulation.

Lutrate is administered as a depot injection, typically monthly or quarterly. Common side effects include hot flashes, injection site reactions, and decreased bone density with long-term use. Patients may experience an initial symptom flare before improvement. It should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider experienced in cancer or hormone therapy.
