Prevention and treatment of bacterial infections in second- and third-degree burn wounds. Often used when patients have hypersensitivity reactions to other topical antibiotics.

Mafenide acts as a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor and exhibits antibacterial activity by penetrating burn eschar and tissues to suppress bacterial growth.

May cause metabolic acidosis due to carbonic anhydrase inhibition, particularly in patients with large burn areas. Can cause pain or burning sensation upon application. Contraindicated in patients with sulfonamide sensitivity. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment.
