Mavenclad is indicated for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including relapsing-remitting disease and active secondary progressive MS, in adults who have had an inadequate response to, or are unable to tolerate, other MS therapies.
Mavenclad contains cladribine, a nucleoside analog that is taken up by lymphocytes and incorporated into DNA, leading to cell death. It selectively reduces B and T lymphocyte counts, which are involved in the autoimmune inflammation that damages the central nervous system in MS.
Mavenclad carries a risk of serious infections, including reactivation of hepatitis B and tuberculosis. Regular blood monitoring is required during and after treatment due to potential cytopenias. It is contraindicated in immunocompromised patients, pregnant women, and those with active malignancies. The medication may increase the risk of malignancy and should be used with caution in patients with cardiac conditions.
