Mavyret is indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in adults and children 3 years of age and older. It is effective against multiple genotypes of HCV (genotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) and may be used in patients with or without cirrhosis, though it is contraindicated in patients with moderate or severe cirrhosis (Child-Pugh B or C).
Mavyret contains two direct-acting antiviral agents: glecaprevir, a protease inhibitor, and pibrentasvir, an NS5A inhibitor. These medications target specific steps in the HCV replication process, blocking viral enzyme activity and preventing the virus from multiplying. This combination allows for a high rate of sustained virologic response (SVR), effectively curing the infection in most patients.
Mavyret is taken orally once daily with food, typically for 8, 12, or 16 weeks depending on the patient's treatment history and HCV genotype. Common side effects may include headache, fatigue, and nausea. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications being taken, as Mavyret may interact with certain drugs. It is contraindicated in patients taking certain medications (such as certain anticonvulsants, antibiotics, or HIV medications) and should not be used in patients with moderate to severe liver impairment. Treatment should be monitored by a healthcare provider experienced in managing hepatitis C.
