Acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults and pediatric patients 6 years and older. It is not used for migraine prevention or for treating other types of headaches.
Maxalt is a serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist. It causes vasoconstriction of cranial blood vessels, reduces neuropeptide release, and decreases pain signal transmission, providing relief from migraine symptoms including headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.
Maxalt should be taken at the onset of migraine symptoms for best effectiveness. It is contraindicated in patients with cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, hemiplegic or basilar migraine, and those taking MAO inhibitors within 14 days. Common side effects include dizziness, somnolence, and fatigue. Do not exceed recommended dosing and allow at least 2 hours between doses if needed.
