Maxitrol is used to treat inflammatory conditions of the eye that are caused by or risk infection, including post-surgical inflammation, conjunctivitis, keratitis, and other ocular inflammatory disorders where bacterial infection is present or suspected.

The two antibiotics (neomycin and polymyxin B) work together to kill susceptible bacteria by disrupting their cell membranes and protein synthesis. The corticosteroid (dexamethasone) reduces inflammation, swelling, and redness by suppressing the immune response in the affected eye tissue.

Maxitrol is for ophthalmic use only and should not be injected into the eye. Prolonged use may increase risk of secondary fungal infections, glaucoma, or cataracts. Patients with known hypersensitivity to any components, untreated viral or fungal eye infections, or certain other conditions should not use this medication. Medical supervision is required for proper diagnosis and treatment duration.
