Mecasermin

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Mecasermin is a recombinant form of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) used to treat growth disorders caused by IGF-1 deficiency. It is prescribed for children with conditions such as primary IGF-1 deficiency or growth hormone insensitivity syndrome (Laron syndrome) who have low IGF-1 levels but normal or elevated growth hormone. The medication promotes linear growth by directly providing the hormone needed for normal skeletal development.

Quick summary

Mecasermin is a synthetic IGF-1 hormone used to treat growth failure in children with IGF-1 deficiency or growth hormone insensitivity.

Treatment of growth failure in children with severe primary IGF-1 deficiency (primary IGFD) and growth hormone insensitivity syndrome (GHIS, also known as Laron syndrome). These are rare conditions where the body cannot produce or respond to adequate levels of IGF-1 despite normal or elevated growth hormone secretion.

Mecasermin provides exogenous IGF-1, bypassing the need for growth hormone stimulation. IGF-1 normally mediates the growth-promoting effects of growth hormone on bones and tissues. By directly supplying IGF-1, mecarsermin stimulates linear growth, skeletal maturation, and cellular proliferation in target tissues.

Administered by subcutaneous injection once or twice daily. Common side effects include hypoglycemia (must be given with food), injection site reactions, and headache. Contraindicated in patients with active or suspected neoplasia. Requires careful monitoring of blood glucose, growth response, and IGF-1 levels. Should only be prescribed by specialists experienced in managing growth disorders.
