Prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B in individuals from 10 years of age and older, particularly recommended for adolescents, college students living in dormitories, and those with certain immunocompromising conditions or complement deficiencies.
The vaccine contains proteins derived from the surface of serogroup B meningococcal bacteria, which stimulate the immune system to produce protective antibodies against future infection without causing the disease itself.
Common side effects may include injection site pain, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches. The vaccine does not protect against other meningococcal serogroups. As with all vaccines, complete protection is not guaranteed, and symptoms of infection should still be promptly evaluated by a healthcare provider.
