Active immunization against invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W, and Y in individuals 2 years of age and older. Commonly recommended for adolescents, college students living in dormitories, military recruits, and those traveling to or residing in areas with high meningococcal disease risk.
Contains purified polysaccharide antigens from the four meningococcal capsular polysaccharides (A, C, W, Y) conjugated to a carrier protein. This conjugate technology converts T-cell independent polysaccharide antigens into T-cell dependent antigens, enhancing immunogenicity and generating stronger, longer-lasting antibody responses compared to unconjugated polysaccharide vaccines.
Administered as a single 0.5 mL intramuscular injection, typically in the deltoid muscle. Common adverse reactions include injection site pain, headache, fatigue, and malaise. Contraindicated in individuals with known severe hypersensitivity to any vaccine component. Does not protect against serogroup B meningococcal disease. Medical supervision is required for administration.
