Treats serious infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and septicemia caused by susceptible organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter species, Proteus species, and certain Streptococcus species.
As a beta-lactam antibiotic, mezlocillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for cross-linking peptidoglycan chains during cell wall formation, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.
Administered intravenously or intramuscularly; should be used with caution in patients with penicillin allergy due to cross-reactivity; may cause gastrointestinal side effects, hypersensitivity reactions, and requires dose adjustment in renal impairment; resistance may develop during treatment.
