Micafungin
Micafungin is an intravenous antifungal medication classified as an echinocandin that works by inhibiting fungal cell wall synthesis. It is primarily used to treat serious fungal infections caused by Candida species, including invasive candidiasis and esophageal candidiasis, as well as for preventing fungal infections in immunocompromised patients such as those undergoing stem cell transplantation.

Common uses
Primary therapeutic indications for Micafungin
Route of administration
Micafungin is administered exclusively via intravenous infusion
Treatment of invasive candidiasis (including candidemia), esophageal candidiasis, and prophylaxis of invasive fungal infections in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation or those with neutropenia. It is effective against various Candida species including C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, and C. parapsilosis.
Micafungin is an echinocandin antifungal that works by non-competitively inhibiting beta-(1,3)-D-glucan synthase, an enzyme essential for the synthesis of the fungal cell wall. This inhibition weakens the cell wall, leading to osmotic instability and death of the fungal cell.
Administered exclusively by intravenous infusion. Common adverse effects include fever, headache, nausea, and liver enzyme elevations. Rare but serious effects include anaphylaxis, hemolysis, and renal impairment. Should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing liver or kidney disease. Requires regular monitoring of liver and renal function during treatment.
