Micrhogam is used to prevent Rh sensitization in Rh-negative women during pregnancy and after delivery of an Rh-positive baby. It is typically administered after miscarriage, abortion, amniocentesis, or other events where fetal blood may mix with maternal blood. It may also be used in certain cases of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).
Micrhogam contains antibodies against the Rh(D) antigen found on red blood cells. When administered to an Rh-negative person, these antibodies bind to any Rh-positive fetal red blood cells that may have entered the maternal bloodstream, preventing the mother's immune system from recognizing and producing its own antibodies against them.
Micrhogam is administered by intramuscular injection at specific times during pregnancy (typically around 28 weeks) and within 72 hours after delivery or sensitizing events. It should not be given to Rh-positive individuals or those already sensitized. Common side effects may include injection site reactions, mild fever, and headache. This medication requires a prescription and is a specialized blood product.
