Brimonidine
Mirvaso is a topical gel medication containing brimonidine tartrate, an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. It is FDA-approved for treating persistent facial erythema (redness) associated with rosacea in adults. By causing vasoconstriction of facial blood vessels, it reduces visible redness, typically applied once daily to affected areas of the face.

Mirvaso is indicated for the topical treatment of persistent (nontransient) facial erythema associated with rosacea in adults. It does not treat papules, pustules, or other rosacea symptoms but specifically targets the background redness characteristic of this skin condition.
Mirvaso contains brimonidine, an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. When applied topically, it binds to alpha-2 receptors on smooth muscle cells lining facial blood vessels, triggering vasoconstriction. This narrowing of superficial facial blood vessels reduces blood flow to the area, thereby diminishing visible erythema.
Mirvaso is for topical use only on the face and should not be applied to irritated skin, lips, or mucous membranes. Common side effects may include worsening erythema, flushing, and skin irritation at the application site. Patients should avoid using it with other topical irritants. Those with cardiovascular disease, depression, or who are taking certain medications (MAO inhibitors, CNS depressants) should consult their healthcare provider before use. Effects typically appear within 30 minutes to several hours after application.
