Molidustat

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 25, 2026

Molidustat is an oral medication used to treat anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It works by inhibiting hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH), which stimulates the body's natural production of erythropoietin and increases red blood cell formation. This medication is typically prescribed when anemia due to reduced kidney function does not respond adequately to other treatments.

Quick summary

Molidustat is an oral antianemic agent used to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease by stimulating natural erythropoietin production.

Molidustat is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic anemia in adults with chronic kidney disease. It is used when patients have reduced kidney function that leads to insufficient erythropoietin production and subsequent low red blood cell counts.

Molidustat inhibits hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH) enzymes. By blocking these enzymes, the medication stabilizes hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF), which normally increase during low oxygen conditions. This leads to enhanced expression of genes involved in erythropoietin production, iron metabolism, and red blood cell development, resulting in increased hemoglobin levels.

Molidustat is administered orally and is typically used as an alternative to injectable erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. Treatment requires regular monitoring of hemoglobin levels, iron status, and kidney function. It should not be used in patients with uncontrolled hypertension, recent cardiovascular events, or during pregnancy. As with all anemia treatments, target hemoglobin ranges must be maintained to avoid overcorrection and associated complications.
