Mupirocin is primarily used to treat impetigo and other minor skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It is also available as a nasal ointment for eradication of nasal MRSA colonization in healthcare settings.

Mupirocin inhibits bacterial RNA synthetase (specifically isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase), which prevents the incorporation of isoleucine into bacterial proteins. This inhibition of protein synthesis is bactericidal against susceptible organisms.

For topical use only; avoid contact with eyes. The nasal ointment should not be used alongside other nasal products. Resistance may develop with prolonged use. Apply a small amount to the affected area 2-3 times daily as directed. Discontinue if sensitization or severe irritation occurs.
