Myambutol is indicated for the treatment of active pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is always used as part of a combination therapy regimen with other anti-TB medications such as isoniazid, rifampin, and/or pyrazinamide to prevent bacterial resistance.
Myambutol works by inhibiting arabinosyl transferase, an enzyme essential for the synthesis of the mycobacterial cell wall. This bacteriostatic action prevents the bacteria from multiplying, allowing the body's immune system to eliminate the infection.
Myambutol can cause optic neuritis, which may manifest as decreased visual acuity or red-green color blindness. Regular visual acuity and color vision tests are recommended during treatment. It should be avoided in patients with pre-existing optic neuritis. Inform your doctor about any existing eye conditions, kidney problems, or if you are pregnant before starting treatment.
