Mycobutin is indicated for the prevention of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in patients with advanced HIV infection. It may also be used in the treatment of established MAC infections and other mycobacterial infections, including tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis.

Mycobutin is a rifamycin antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, which prevents bacterial RNA synthesis and halts protein production, ultimately stopping bacterial growth.

Common side effects include rash, gastrointestinal upset, and discolored body fluids (urine, tears, sweat). It may cause significant drug interactions with various medications including antiretrovirals, anticoagulants, and hormonal contraceptives. Regular monitoring and periodic ophthalmologic examinations may be recommended during extended treatment.
