Naprosyn is prescribed for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, juvenile arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, gout, menstrual cramps, and minor aches and pains such as headaches, muscle aches, and backache.
As an NSAID, Naprosyn works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are responsible for producing prostaglandins—chemicals that promote inflammation, pain, and fever. By blocking these enzymes, naproxen reduces inflammation and alleviates pain.
Naprosyn may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) and gastrointestinal complications (bleeding, ulcers). It should not be used before or after coronary artery bypass surgery. Patients with kidney problems, heart disease, high blood pressure, or history of stomach bleeding should use caution. Alcohol should be avoided as it may increase the risk of stomach bleeding.
