Natpara is indicated for the control of hypocalcemia in patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism. It is specifically approved for use in adults who cannot be adequately managed with calcium and vitamin D supplementation alone.

Natpara contains recombinant human parathyroid hormone (1-84), which is identical to the naturally occurring PTH. It works by binding to PTH receptors in bones, kidneys, and other tissues to help regulate calcium and phosphate homeostasis, thereby raising and maintaining blood calcium levels.

Natpara carries a boxed warning due to the potential risk of osteosarcoma observed in animal studies. Regular monitoring of blood calcium levels is required during treatment. The medication should be discontinued if osteosarcoma is suspected. Common side effects may include paresthesia, hypocalcemia, headache, and hypercalcemia.
