Neisseria Meningitidis Serogroup C Conjugate Vaccine

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 29, 2026

This vaccine provides active immunization against Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C, a bacterium that can cause serious and potentially life-threatening infections such as meningitis and septicemia. The vaccine contains capsular polysaccharides from serogroup C conjugated to diphtheria toxoid protein, which enhances the immune response and enables effective protection even in young children. It is primarily used in national immunization programs and for travelers to regions where serogroup C meningococcal disease is endemic.

Quick summary

Prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C, including meningitis and meningococcemia. Recommended for infants, children, adolescents, and travelers to or residents of endemic areas.

The vaccine contains capsular polysaccharide antigens from N. meningitidis serogroup C that are chemically conjugated to diphtheria toxoid protein carrier. This conjugation converts the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigen into a T-cell dependent antigen, producing stronger and more durable immune responses, particularly in young children whose immune systems cannot respond effectively to polysaccharide antigens alone.

Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any vaccine component. Common adverse reactions include injection site pain, redness, and swelling; fever and irritability may occur in infants. Not effective against other meningococcal serogroups. Should be administered with appropriate precautions in individuals with bleeding disorders.
