Prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C, including meningitis and meningococcemia. Commonly administered to infants starting at 2 months of age, with catch-up schedules for older children and adolescents who have not been previously vaccinated.

The vaccine contains meningococcal serogroup C oligosaccharides chemically linked (conjugated) to a diphtheria toxoid carrier protein (CRM197). This conjugation converts a T-cell independent antigen into a T-cell dependent antigen, enhancing immune response and immunological memory, particularly important in young children whose immune systems respond poorly to polysaccharide antigens alone.

Vaccine is administered intramuscularly. Common side effects include injection site reactions, fever, and irritability in infants. Contraindicated in individuals with known severe hypersensitivity to any vaccine component. Should not be used during acute febrile illness. May be given simultaneously with other routine childhood vaccines.
