Nesina is indicated for use in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control. It is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise and may be combined with other diabetes medications such as metformin, pioglitazone, or insulin when monotherapy is inadequate.
Nesina works by inhibiting the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), which breaks down incretin hormones. By blocking this enzyme, alogliptin increases levels of GLP-1 and GIP, hormones that stimulate insulin secretion and suppress glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner, helping to lower blood sugar levels after meals.
Nesina is not indicated for use in type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Common side effects may include upper respiratory tract infection, headache, and nasopharyngitis. The medication should be used with caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis, and liver function monitoring may be recommended. As with all diabetes medications, blood sugar monitoring is essential during treatment.
