Treatment of hyperlipidemia including elevated LDL cholesterol and triglycerides; prevention and treatment of niacin deficiency (pellagra)

Niacin reduces hepatic (liver) production of LDL cholesterol and VLDL particles (which carry triglycerides), while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It also inhibits mobilization of fatty acids from adipose tissue.

Common side effect is flushing (warmth, redness, itching); should be taken with food. May affect liver function and blood glucose levels. Avoid alcohol during treatment. Do not substitute extended-release formulations for immediate-release without medical supervision. Use only under healthcare provider guidance.
