Treatment of severe insomnia, particularly difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, and management of certain types of seizures including infantile spasms and myoclonic seizures. Sometimes used for anxiety when short-term relief is needed.
Nitrazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine class and works by binding to benzodiazepine receptors on the GABA-A receptor complex, which enhances the inhibitory effects of GABA neurotransmitter. This results in increased neuronal hyperpolarization, reduced brain activity, and produces sedative, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects.
This medication carries risk of dependence and tolerance with prolonged use, typically recommended only for short-term treatment (2-4 weeks). Should not be stopped abruptly after long-term use. May cause drowsiness, especially the morning after use, and should be used with caution in elderly patients, those with respiratory conditions, or history of substance abuse. Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants while taking this medication.
