Used for the prevention and treatment of skin infections in second and third-degree burns, skin grafting sites, and minor lacerations, abrasions, and cuts. Also used for treating bacterial skin infections and wounds at risk of infection.
Nitrofurazone enters bacterial cells where it is reduced by microbial flavoprotein enzymes to form reactive intermediates that damage bacterial DNA, ribosomal proteins, and other essential cellular components, leading to bacterial cell death.
For topical use only. Avoid application over large burn areas or broken skin for extended periods due to risk of systemic absorption and potential toxicity. May cause local skin irritation or allergic reactions in some patients. Should not be used in patients with severe renal impairment. Prolonged use may result in bacterial resistance.
