Olumiant is FDA-approved for treating adults with moderate to severe active rheumatoid arthritis who have had an inadequate response to one or more tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers. It is also approved for adults with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis who have not responded to other systemic treatments. Additionally, it received emergency use authorization for hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
Olumiant is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor. It works by blocking the activity of JAK enzymes, which are involved in the inflammatory processes that contribute to autoimmune diseases. By inhibiting these pathways, it helps reduce the inflammation and immune system overactivity characteristic of conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and atopic dermatitis.
Olumiant carries a boxed warning for serious infections, malignancy, and major adverse cardiovascular events. It may increase the risk of blood clots and should not be used during pregnancy. Patients should be monitored for signs of infection, blood abnormalities, and liver function changes during treatment. Live vaccines should be avoided while taking this medication.
