Primarily used for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), especially in patients who have failed treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors like imatinib. It is also used in patients with the T315I mutation who cannot receive other targeted therapies.
Functions by blocking protein synthesis through inhibition of the 60S ribosomal subunit, preventing the initial elongation step of translation. It also exhibits hypomethylating properties by inhibiting DNA methyltransferases.
Administered as subcutaneous injections. Common side effects include myelosuppression (low blood cell counts), fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Requires regular blood count monitoring during treatment and should be used under the supervision of an experienced oncologist.
