Orencia is used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis in patients who have not responded adequately to other disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
Orencia is a selective co-stimulation modulator that blocks the CD80/CD86:CD28 costimulatory signal required for full T-cell activation, thereby reducing the inflammatory response that causes joint damage in autoimmune conditions.
Orencia may increase the risk of serious infections and should not be initiated during active infections. Patients should be screened for tuberculosis and hepatitis B before treatment. Common side effects include headache, upper respiratory infections, nausea, and injection site reactions with subcutaneous use.
