Orenitram is indicated for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, WHO Group 1) to improve exercise capacity and delay disease progression. It may be used as monotherapy or in combination with other PAH therapies.
As a prostacyclin analog, Orenitram acts on prostacyclin receptors to cause direct vasodilation of pulmonary arteries. This reduces pulmonary vascular resistance and improves blood flow through the lungs.
Orenitram is only available as a brand-name medication with no generic equivalent. Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, and jaw pain. Patients should not stop taking this medication abruptly as this may cause worsening of PAH symptoms. Dosage must be adjusted individually under medical supervision.
